About the Guide: Ben Wolfe
Ben Wolfe Bio:
I caught my first fish when I was 4 years old, with my grandfather’s fly rod. Ever since then, I have been actively pursuing any fish that I can. Whether it’s in the salt, or freshwater, I love them all. I feel equally comfortable with either conventional or fly gear in my hands, giving anglers an experienced guide that can accommodate any fishing preferences a client might have. Growing up in Michigan, I spent all of my summers in the northwestern part of the state chasing smallmouth and salmon. I am a fully licensed Captain through the US Coast Guard, and also fully insured. I love to teach what I have learned over the years, and I continue to learn everyday, whether it’s from the fish, or the anglers themselves. Formerly a Chef, it is my belief that on the water, as it is in a professional kitchen, details are everything.
We provide all of the equipment needed for your day of fishing–rods, reels and all necessary tackle. In addition, there is a cooler filled with ice just for keeping your catch cold, as well as a built-in ice chest for beverages and snacks.
The boat is a 17 foot 2009 custom jet sled made specifically for running Western Michigan’s river systems. It is furnished with a brand new 90 horsepower Yamaha jet-drive engine. This will allow the boat to run in water mere inches deep, providing a much safer alternative to a propeller-driven vessel in the log-filled and sandbar strewn Manistee River and other area river systems. This boat can easily and safely fish 1 to 3 anglers. On board is all necessary safety equipment, including marine radio; life jackets; a throwable flotation device and first aid kit.
Rods and reels: Gear rods and reels have been extensively tested to offer the very best in performance. After countless hours, we have come up with the ultimate in rod choice. We use both Lamiglas and G Loomis rods. These rods are paired perfectly with Shimano Stradic spinning reels and Ross centerpin reels. Fly rods are all made by Sage, and paired with Hatch fly reels. These are top of the line rods and reels that can take the worst abuse any salmon or steelhead can dish out, and are a true joy to fish with. You will not find better equipment for your trip.
Additionally, if you choose to fish for one of the river’s other inhabitants-walleye, smallmouth bass or trout, we have species specific rods and reels just for that purpose.
